- Drive-Thru Tree Whimsy: Craving a quirky stop? The Avenue offers three iconic drive-thru trees, each with a small fee. Imagine cruising through a redwood giant – a unique photo opportunity and a fun pit stop for the whole family!
- Visitor Centers for the Curious: Several visitor centers pepper the Avenue, providing a wealth of information about the redwoods. Stop by the Myers Flat center to chat with park rangers, learn fascinating facts, and grab detailed maps to plan your explorations.

We personally enjoyed our stay at the dog-friendly Redwood Riverwalk Hotel – the perfect place to unwind after a day of redwood adventures!
Day 2: Redwood Majesty & Wildlife Encounters (Grizzly Creek Redwoods & Humboldt Bay)
Morning Redwood Majesty: Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park

Brace yourself for another day of redwood awe! This morning, we head to Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park. Get ready to immerse yourself in the grandeur of these ancient giants.
- Redwood Creek Trail: A relatively easy 1.5-mile loop. Imagine winding through towering redwoods and lush ferns, breathing in the fresh forest air and marveling at the ancient giants that line the path.
- Cheatham Grove: A must-see for Star Wars fans! This grove was a filming location for Return of the Jedi and features the iconic forest where the Ewoks chased the Stormtroopers. May the redwood force be with you!
- Other Grizzly Creek Highlights: Explore the park’s diverse landscape with additional trails like the 0.7-mile Bald Hills Trail for a moderate climb or the more challenging 3.5-mile Spruce Creek Trail for experienced hikers. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife – Roosevelt elk, deer, and various bird species all call this park home.
Afternoon: After a morning immersed in the redwoods, continue your journey north towards Trinidad.
- Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge: This 16,000-acre refuge provides a haven for diverse wildlife, particularly migratory birds.

Eureka also offers a variety of restaurants and shops for those seeking a break from the outdoors.
Evening: Settle in for the night in the charming coastal town of Trinidad.
- Mileage: ~20 miles from Eureka or ~35 miles from Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Trinidad, our final stop today, offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Craving a delicious meal? Treat yourself to fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant, all while soaking in ocean views. Feeling energetic? Explore the tide pools at College Cove or hit the scenic trails at Trinidad State Beach for a sunset hike.
Rest Up for More Adventures: Where to Stay in Trinidad
Trinidad offers a variety of charming accommodations, from cozy B&Bs to oceanfront hotels. For our stay, we chose the Trinidad Inn, and absolutely loved it! This cute roadside inn provided a comfortable and relaxing base for exploring the town and surrounding area.
Day 3: Coastal Bliss in Trinidad
Today, we take a break from the towering redwoods and embrace the beauty and serenity of the California coast. Trinidad, with its charming harbor and dramatic cliffs, serves as the perfect base for a day of exploration and relaxation.
Morning: Fuel up for a day of adventure with breakfast at a local cafe in Trinidad. Grab your swimsuit and beach essentials – it’s time to explore the coastline!
Mid-Morning: Start your coastal adventure with a scenic hike along the Trinidad Head Trail.
- Trinidad Head: Embark on a scenic hike along the moderate 2.5-mile Trinidad Head Trail. Take in breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, Trinidad Bay, and the coastline. During peak season (December-May), keep an eye out for migrating whales!
Afternoon: After your hike, head south to Sue-Meg State Park, a hidden gem known for its stunning beaches and diverse wildlife.
- Agate Beach: This beautiful stretch of coastline is a paradise for beachcombers. The name speaks for itself – the beach is renowned for its smooth, colorful agates, perfect for collecting as souvenirs.
- Beachcombing & Rockhounding: As you explore the various beaches around Trinidad, keep your eyes peeled for treasures! Look for agates, jasper, and other colorful stones along the shoreline. Nearby lagoons like Big Lagoon and Stone Lagoon offer unique shells and fossils.
Sunset at College Cove Trinidad: End your coastal adventure with a breathtaking sunset at College Cove. This scenic cove is popular for tidepooling, but in the evening it transforms into a haven for sunset viewing. Find a spot on the rocks, relax, and watch the vibrant colors of the sky dance over the Pacific Ocean.
Evening: After the sunset, return to Trinidad for relaxation. Enjoy a drink at a beachfront bar, or indulge in a dinner with ocean views. In the evening, stroll along the harbor and soak in the cool night air.
Overnight: Spend another night in Trinidad.
Day 4 & 5: Redwood National Parks: Giants, Waterfalls & Elk Encounters (Elk Prairie Campground)
Elk Prairie Campground serves as your base camp for the next two days, surrounded by towering redwoods and offering easy access to a plethora of trails and scenic wonders. Get ready to fully immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of Redwood National and State Parks!
Mileage: ~27 miles (Trinidad to Campground)
Getting There & Setting Up:
- Morning: Enjoy a leisure breakfast in Trinidad before packing up your car and heading north. The drive itself is a scenic treat, offering glimpses of the Pacific Ocean and rolling hills dotted with redwoods.
- Elk Prairie Campground: Your home for the next two nights awaits! Set up camp at Elk Prairie, taking in the fresh forest air and dappled sunlight filtering through the redwood canopy.
- Tip: Consider setting up camp after your Trillium Falls hike to avoid backtracking.
Day 4: Redwood Majesty & Cascading Delights
- Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail: Start your redwood adventure with a visit to the legendary Lady Bird Johnson Grove, a designated National Natural Landmark. Hike along the easily accessible 1.5-mile loop trail and marvel at the beauty of these ancient giants.
- Trillium Falls: In the afternoon, embark on a short hike to Trillium Falls, a hidden gem tucked within the park. The waterfall cascades through a lush fern canyon, offering a refreshing and scenic escape. The trail is a moderate 1.5-mile out-and-back journey.
- The waterfall isn’t that big, but its a beautiful hike through a younger redwood forest.
- Fern Canyon: No trip to Redwood National and State Parks is complete without experiencing Fern Canyon. This unique geological wonder features towering walls covered with lush ferns and moss, creating a scene straight out of a fairytale. The canyon floor is a stream and requires navigating over rocks and logs. Be prepared to get your feet wet hiking here.
- Be Aware: Check weather conditions before embarking on this hike, as the canyon can become inaccessible after heavy rains.
- Evening: As dusk settles, keep your eyes peeled for Roosevelt elk, frequent visitors to the meadows surrounding Elk Prairie Campground, especially during early mornings and evenings. Witnessing these majestic creatures grazing near your campsite is a true treat!
Day 5: Exploring Further & Trail Time
- Elk Prairie Trails: Elk Prairie Campground boasts a network of easily accessible trails right at your doorstep. Options range from short interpretive walks to moderate hikes, allowing you to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the redwood ecosystem.

- Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway: Take a leisurely drive along this scenic roadway, which winds through the heart of Redwood National and State Parks. Pull over at designated viewpoints to soak in the breathtaking panorama of towering redwoods and lush valleys. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife – Roosevelt elk are frequent visitors along the parkway.
Evening: As your redwood adventure draws to a close, enjoy a delicious campfire dinner under the towering canopy!
Day 6 & 7: Redwood Farewell & Coastal Charm in Crescent City

- Crescent City: Your home for the next two nights awaits! Nestled along the rugged California coastline, Crescent City offers a delightful blend of natural beauty and historical charm. Check into your hotel and soak in the refreshing ocean breeze.
- Afternoon: Embark on an exploration of Crescent City’s coastline. Start with a visit to the Battery Point Lighthouse, a historic landmark perched on a rocky bluff. Depending on the season, you might be able to take a tour of the lighthouse and learn about its fascinating history. Afterwards, take a stroll along the beach, breathe in the fresh ocean air, and admire the dramatic coastal scenery.
Day 7: Redwood Farewell: Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park: Lace up your hiking boots for a final day immersed in the towering wonders of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. This wonderland boasts some of the world’s tallest and oldest trees, making it a fitting farewell to the redwoods.

- Here, a whole forest seems to sprout from the redwoods themselves, with sycamore trees clinging to their towering trunks. Embark on a 1.5-mile hike to witness these magnificent trees firsthand.
- Boy Scout Tree Trail: Feeling adventurous? Tackle the 5.5-mile loop trail on the Boy Scout Tree Trail. This moderate hike winds past towering redwoods, culminating in a breathtaking encounter with the giant Boy Scout Tree, reaching a staggering 238+ feet!
- The Boy Scout Tree is about 2.5 miles in. Look for a small arrow pointing to a smaller trail up the hill to where the tree is
Evening: Return to Crescent City for the evening. Enjoy a delicious seafood dinner at a beachfront restaurant, watching the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors.
