A Journey Through Time: The Flåm Railway

The adventure begins aboard the legendary Flåm Railway Train. Nicknamed “The Roof of Norway,” this scenic railway takes you on a 20-kilometer journey from Myrdal to Flåm, climbing a staggering 865 meters (2,838 feet) in just under an hour. As the train chugs along, witness breathtaking panoramic views of valleys, waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks. Lush valleys transform into rugged mountains, cascading waterfalls plunge into the depths, and charming villages peek out from hidden corners.

Note: We were short on time here so we didn’t end up taking the train. Instead, we chose to do the Cruise and get an up close look at the fjords from the water. But our cabin was along the train route so we’d hear it pass every so often

A Fjord Adventure: Taking the Nærøyfjord Cruise

No Flåm visit is complete without experiencing the fjords! Embark on a scenic ferry ride through the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and prepare to be awestruck by its dramatic beauty.

Imagine this:

  • Towering cliffs, most exceeding 1,000 meters (3,280 ft), rise up from the emerald waters, their sheer scale leaving you stunned.
  • Waterfalls cascade down the cliffsides, creating a symphony of sound that echoes through the narrow fjord.
  • Lush vegetation clings to the rocky slopes, adding vibrant color to the dramatic landscape.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for seals sunning on the rocks, eagles soaring overhead, and fishing villages nestled along the coastline.

The Nærøyfjord is one of the world’s narrowest fjords, measures a mere 250 meters (820 ft) wide at its slimmest point. As the ferry navigates this passage, feel a sense of awe and wonder surrounded by towering cliffs on both sides. I was racing around the deck trying to capture all the moments!

This cruise isn’t just about the jaw-dropping scenery (although, let’s be honest, that’s pretty epic). Keep your eyes peeled for traces of the area’s fascinating past! You might spot remnants of ancient Viking settlements, whispering tales of explorers who braved these waters centuries ago. There’s even a chance to see abandoned farms clinging to the cliffsides – silent testaments to the Norwegians’ determination to carve out a life in this dramatic landscape. Think “living on the edge” taken to a whole new level!
