How to Make Friends While Solo Traveling: Adventures in Faro Portugal

Faro beckoned with its sun-drenched beaches and rich history, but a tiny voice in my head whispered doubts. “Making friends solo traveling? Isn’t that for extroverts and social butterflies?” Truth be told, navigating new social circles back home can be a challenge, let alone in a foreign country. Fast forward to my Faro adventure, and guess what?

Plot twist: sparking connections with fellow travelers was far more random (and rewarding!) than I ever imagined. Here’s the story of how Faro Portugal transformed into a stage for unexpected friendships on my solo journey.

Day 1: Solo Traveling in Algarve Portugal

The Algarve sun greeted me with a warm hug as I arrived in Faro early in the morning. This was it – my first time traveling alone, and the excitement crackled in the air! After dropping my bags at the hostel, I couldn’t wait to delve into the heart of this captivating city.

I wandered around Faro Old Town, getting lost in the charming cobbled streets and historic buildings. The famed Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos) sent shivers down my spine, but I couldn’t resist checking it out. It was like stepping back in time! 🕰️ I even saw some storks nesting on the rooftops, adding a touch of whimsy to the city.

The majestic Sé Cathedral, a landmark steeped in centuries of faith, demanded a visit. Stepping inside, I marveled at the intricate stained glass windows and the peaceful ambiance. For a dose of nature, I found myself captivated by the lush greenery of the Municipal Park, a haven of peacocks displaying their vibrant plumage. As the day drew to a close, I stumbled upon a hidden gem – a charming cafe serving up delicious local fare at budget-friendly prices, a perfect pitstop to refuel and plan my next Algarve adventure.

The day culminated in a breathtaking spectacle – the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of fiery orange and soft purple. Gazing out at the shimmering lagoon, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of accomplishment and excitement for the rest of my trip.

Day 2: Unexpected Connections in Tavira & The Power of Public Bathrooms

Day two dawned with a touch of solo travel blues. Feeling a little lost and lonely. I was hanging out in the hostel common area, hoping to meet someone. While luck wasn’t on my side that morning, the ever-helpful receptionist at the hostel came to the rescue. Their suggestion? A day trip to the charming town of Tavira.

The journey to Tavira unfolded smoothly, but the real surprise awaited me in the most unexpected place – the train station bathroom line. As fate would have it, five souls found themselves waiting patiently: two friendly Canadians on their way back to Faro, two American retirees embarking on their Portuguese adventure, and myself. What began as a shared space quickly transformed into a lively conversation. For nearly half an hour, we swapped travel tips, discussed must-see destinations in both Tavira and Faro, and discovered a fast friendship.

While our paths diverged as the Canadians continued their journey back to Faro, the American duo invited me to tag along for the day in Tavira! It wasn’t exactly the travel companionship I envisioned, but hey, sometimes the most unexpected connections blossom into the most cherished memories. (Let’s be honest, sometimes our best friends come in unexpected packages!)

Part 2: Life Southern Hospitality & Shared Stories

My day trip companions, let’s call them L and TB, turned out to be a delightful surprise. Hailing from the southern United States, they embodied a spirit of warmth and openness that transcended any initial reservations.

After a day of exploring Tavira’s charming streets and hidden gems, they generously treated me to dinner at a local diner. Over steaming plates of comfort food, our conversation delved beyond the usual travel chatter. L and TB, friends since kindergarten, shared stories that painted a vivid picture of growing up in a segregated Southern school system.

L’s tale was particularly captivating. Her father, a conservative lawyer, found himself tasked with writing a bussing policy for their school district – a twist of fate that made him an unexpected advocate for integration. We discussed the stark differences in perspective between then and the recent Black Lives Matter movement, a conversation filled with both historical insight and a hopeful outlook for the future.

L has familial connections to one of the first confederate statues that was torn down during the movement. Several years prior, she connected with a cousin who was a descendant of a slave that her ancestor had owned and taken advantage of (same ancestor who got his statue torn down). They found each about each other when Reggie, a song writer, spoke at an event about his life story. One of L’s friends was in the crowd, recognized the family name and connected the two of them together.

Before meeting, both sides were concerned about being rejected. Reggie was worried that L’s family would reject him for being Black and L’s family was worried Reggie would reject them for being White. Later on, they went back together to the farm her family owned to find some kind of closure. Reggie would then go on to write a song about the experience.

TB’s story, while less personal, provided another window into the South’s complex past. Her father attended a medical school tarnished by a grave-robbing scandal during his student days. While not directly involved, the story served as a stark reminder of the region’s troubled past.

Of course, our conversation wasn’t solely focused on weighty topics. Lighter subjects like travel adventures and entrepreneurial dreams filled the air with laughter and camaraderie. As the evening drew to a close, we exchanged email addresses, promising to stay in touch.

Back at the hostel, fate had another surprise in store. M, a fellow solo traveler on her way to reunite with family in Portugal, had just checked in and occupied the bunk across from mine. A new adventure was about to begin, and the connections I’d made throughout the day filled me with a newfound sense of excitement and the promise of shared experiences yet to come.

Day 3:  Boats, Birds, and Birthdays

Day Three unfolded with a new travel companion – M, a fellow solo traveler from Mozambique. United by our shared wanderlust, we chatted excitedly the night before, and she generously invited me to celebrate her cousin’s 20th birthday party that evening. While M spent the day with family, I set off to explore Faro’s natural beauty on my own.

Following a recommendation from the friendly Canadians I met in Tavira, I embarked on a 3-hour boat tour to the nearby Desertas Islands (Ilhas Desertas) and Faro Island (Ilha de Faro). While wildlife sightings were a bit elusive on this trip, the islands themselves offered a relaxing escape. The pristine beaches, bathed in the Algarve sunshine, held a certain charm, though perhaps not as awe-inspiring for a California native.

Ludo Trail: A Birdwatcher’s Paradise:

Next, I ventured to Ludo, a haven for nature lovers and a must-visit for any Algarve itinerary. Often referred to as Faro’s premier “hiking trail,” Ludo offers a scenic loop around a bird sanctuary. The star attraction? Undoubtedly the graceful pink flamingos wading serenely in the shallow waters. A plethora of other wading birds also call this sanctuary home, making Ludo a paradise for birdwatchers.

Pro Tip: Opt for a morning or late afternoon visit to avoid the scorching afternoon sun. While the heat might have tested my limits, seeing wild flamingos was definitely worth it!

As we prepared to head out for the birthday party, another solo traveler named T (from Germany) checked into the hostel. Within minutes of introductions, M invited T to the party and off we went.

At first both T and I were concerned about just showing up, but M assured us that its common practice in Africa and there’s always extra food prepared just for these types of situations.

Part 2: Birthday Party!

Dinner got pushed back a few hours which gave us plenty of time to chat and get to know M and her Mozambican culture. It always fascinated me how openly expressive people from other cultures can be, a stark contrast to the reserved nature of many Asians and Americans (myself included, I’ll admit!)

The apartment we ended up was at the cousin’s older sister’s boyfriends. He’s an artist and rapper who gave everyone hand-drawn art pieces that “fit” us. He looked at me and was like “oh I have something to show you!” He ran out and came back with an vibrant depiction of an oriental dragon.

While M, concerned about potential racial stereotypes, was offended on my behalf, I was completely charmed by the artwork. The design was detailed and striking, devoid of any negativity. The artist himself, a whirlwind of positive energy, embodied the spirit of pure fun with his rapper attire complete with gold chains, sunglasses, and baggy pants. The craziest part? These weren’t just prints, he was handing out original pieces of art!

The entire family embraced us with open arms, ushering us into a whirlwind of warmth and hospitality then proceeded to feed us for the next four hours. Turns out dinner was a mandatory 4 course meal. After each course finished we were already full, but we forced ourselves to keep eating to not be rude. It’s impossible to say no to an African Auntie.

Throughout the evening, laughter and conversation flowed freely. We delved into the rich tapestry of African dance and culture, exchanging stories and building bridges of understanding. As the night drew to a close, Auntie delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing her joy at our unexpected presence. She spoke of the beauty of young people from across the globe connecting and embracing new cultures – a sentiment that resonated deeply within all of us.

The Unexpected Delights of Solo Travel:

Catching a 6:00 AM bus to Porto the next day, I carried with me a heart brimming with warmth and a renewed appreciation for the magic of solo travel. While experiences like this aren’t guaranteed on every solo trip, the chances of encountering unexpected connections and heartwarming moments increase significantly. Solo travel unlocks doors to meet people you never would have crossed paths with otherwise, offering a unique perspective on the tapestry of our world.
