Thessaloniki Travel Guide
Getting To Thessaloniki Greece
Getting to Thessaloniki is surprisingly easy — and part of the adventure! Whether you’re flying in or arriving by bus from elsewhere in Greece, you’ll find plenty of stress-free options.
By Air:
Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) connects directly to major European cities, making it super convenient if you’re coming from abroad. Once you land, you’re just a short ride away from the heart of the city.
Bus: Opt for a budget-friendly bus journey, offering a comfortable and scenic ride through the Greek countryside. Several bus companies operate frequent services from Athens toThessaloniki plus other major Greek cities.
From the Airport to the City Center:
- 🚌 Budget-Friendly Bus: Hop on bus number 78 for a direct trip to the city center. It’s cheap (just a few euros) and also connects to the main KTEL Macedonia bus station if you need to travel onward.
- 💡 Insider tip: Ticket machines on the bus only accept coins and won’t give change, so keep some handy. And while locals sometimes skip buying tickets, it’s best to have one to avoid fines.
- 🚕 Taxi: Prefer a quicker, door-to-door option? Taxis cost around €20 and get you straight to your hotel — perfect if you’re arriving late or traveling with luggage.
By Bus (from Athens or other Greek cities):
Several bus companies run comfortable, frequent routes to Thessaloniki from Athens and beyond. It’s an affordable way to see the countryside, and the KTEL Macedonia bus station makes onward travel easy.
Once You’re Here:
Thessaloniki is wonderfully walkable! Slip on some comfy shoes and explore charming old town alleys, the lively waterfront promenade, and historical sites — all within a stroll.
Extra Tip: If you’re catching bus 78 to the airport, it can get crowded. Grab it earlier along the route, closer to the city center, to score a seat and avoid the rush.
Discover Thessaloniki Old Town and Archaeological Treasures
One of the things that makes Thessaloniki so special? Its history isn’t locked away in museums — it’s woven into the everyday rhythm of the city.
Start your journey in Ano Poli (the Upper Town):
Picture this: narrow cobbled streets lined with colorful houses, ancient walls towering above you, and sweeping panoramic views over the Thermaic Gulf. These impressive Byzantine walls, some dating as far back as the 4th century AD, once protected the city — and now create the perfect backdrop for an afternoon stroll.
Head downhill into the lively city center:
You’ll stumble upon the Rotunda, an architectural marvel from the 4th century that’s worn many hats over time: from Roman mausoleum to Christian church and even a mosque. Step inside to see its stunning dome and centuries-old mosaics.
Just a short walk away stands the Arch of Galerius — built in 305 AD to celebrate a Roman emperor’s victory. Today, it’s a striking historic landmark right next to the city’s modern shopping streets, showing exactly how old and new blend seamlessly here.
Dive deeper into the past:
- 🏺 At the Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum, you’ll wander among intricate mosaics, gold wreaths, and ancient statues that tell the story of Macedonia’s rich heritage.
- 🎨 For art and history lovers, the Museum of Byzantine Culture offers breathtaking collections of Greek Orthodox icons, frescoes, and everyday artifacts, bringing the Byzantine world to life.
What makes Thessaloniki truly unforgettable?
It’s a city where history isn’t just something you visit — it’s something you walk through every day. From ancient ruins and historic towers to cozy taverns and bustling squares, Thessaloniki invites you to step back in time and enjoy the vibrant present all at once.
Thessaloniki’s Vibrant Urban Life
What really surprised me about Thessaloniki wasn’t just its ancient ruins (though those are everywhere!). It was how the past and present feel so alive here — not tucked away behind glass, but woven right into daily life.
One morning, I grabbed a Greek coffee from a little café spilling out onto a cobbled street. Just around the corner? The centuries-old Roman Forum, quietly reminding everyone of the city’s long history. Later, I found myself wandering through vibrant street markets, surrounded by the smell of roasted chestnuts and spices, all framed by historic Ottoman bath houses that have stood here for hundreds of years.
As the day turned to evening, Thessaloniki transformed yet again. Locals and travelers flocked to the lively waterfront promenade — one of my favorite spots in the city. Couples strolled under the iconic “Umbrellas” sculpture, musicians played by the water, and bars set out tables right by the sea. I couldn’t resist joining a sunset booze cruise — floating along the Thermaic Gulf as the sky turned orange and pink was one of those pinch-me travel moments.
Of course, you can’t come here without climbing the famous White Tower. From the top, the view of the sun dipping behind the mountains and casting golden light over the city is absolutely worth the steps. Afterward, I joined locals lounging at the base of the tower, sipping ouzo and soaking in that laid-back Thessaloniki vibe.
What I love most? Thessaloniki never feels stuck in the past — it’s a city that’s alive, changing by the hour, and impossible not to fall in love with. 🌅🍹✨
Thessaloniki Greece: A Culinary & Nightlife Adventure
If there’s one thing I didn’t expect to love this much about Thessaloniki, it’s the food scene. Honestly? Every meal here felt like an experience — whether I was sipping wine at a cozy taverna or grabbing a quick bite between sightseeing stops.
By day: I wandered through the atmospheric Modiano Market, where the smell of freshly baked bread, sizzling souvlaki, and sweet pastries filled the air. I couldn’t resist stopping for mezes — small plates of grilled octopus, creamy tzatziki, and warm pita — all while local musicians played in the background. It felt like stepping into the heartbeat of the city.
On a budget? Thessaloniki has you covered. Near the Rotunda, I found street food gems selling cheesy spanakopita, flaky tiropita, and even giant pizza slices for about €1.50. Perfect fuel for more exploring!
By night: Thessaloniki really comes alive. The historic Ladadika district transforms into a buzzing nightlife hub — think colorful old warehouses turned into cocktail bars, live music spilling out onto cobbled streets, and locals dancing until sunrise. One of my favorite nights started with a glass of local wine at a tucked-away bar and ended hours later, dancing alongside new friends.
For something quieter (but equally magical), I wandered into the old town tavernas. Here, meals feel almost timeless: platters of perfectly grilled meats, fresh seafood drizzled with local olive oil, and glasses of crisp white wine.
What I love most? Whether you’re feasting on fresh seafood by the sea, sharing mezes in a market alley, or dancing the night away in Ladadika, Thessaloniki serves up authenticity at every turn — and always leaves you wanting just one more bite. 🍤🥙✨

Exploring the Churches and Monasteries in Thessaloniki
Stepping into the past:
Wandering through the city, it felt like every corner revealed another hidden gem: from the grand Saint Demetrios Basilica, built in honor of the city’s patron saint, to the beautiful Saint Sophia Church, whose soaring domes and ancient mosaics transport you straight into Byzantine times. These UNESCO-listed sites date back as far as the 4th century — and walking through them, you can almost feel the centuries layered into the stones.
A peaceful escape:
One morning, I climbed up to the Monastery of Vlatadon, nestled in the quiet upper town. Beyond its intricate Byzantine frescoes and charming courtyards, what really stole my breath was the view: the city sprawling out below and the sea shimmering in the distance. It’s the kind of place where you slow down without even meaning to.
More than architecture:
What makes these places truly special isn’t just their history — it’s the atmosphere. Sunlight filtering through ancient domes, candles flickering beside gold icons, and the hushed reverence that fills the air. Everywhere you look, detailed frescoes and mosaics whisper stories of faith, artistry, and centuries-old devotion.
Whether you’re religious or simply love history, Thessaloniki’s churches and monasteries invite you to pause, reflect, and see the city from a whole new perspective. ✨🕊️

Day Trips from Thessaloniki
One of the best things about staying in Thessaloniki? It makes the perfect base to explore some of northern Greece’s most breathtaking sights — all just a short trip away.

Less than an hour’s drive brings you to the Halkidiki Peninsula, where turquoise waters meet charming coastal towns. Think sun-soaked beaches, tiny tavernas right by the sea, and laid-back vibes that feel worlds away from the city.
Walk through ancient history:
History lovers shouldn’t miss Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great. Wandering among ancient mosaics and ruins, it’s incredible to imagine how this small town once shaped an empire.
Monasteries in the sky:
One of the most awe-inspiring day trips I took was to Meteora — famous for its centuries-old monasteries balanced atop towering rock pillars. It’s about 2–3 hours away, but absolutely worth it for the jaw-dropping views alone. (Check out my article about exploring the awe inspiring Meteora monasteries!)
