Though climbing the rock is prohibited to protect its fragile ecosystem, there are plenty of scenic spots to soak in its beauty. One of the most popular ways to admire it is by walking the scenic shoreline trail at the Morro Rock Natural Preserve. It’s a peaceful place to take a morning stroll, spot local wildlife, and feel the ocean breeze on your face.
Want a quieter viewpoint? Head across the harbor to the beach near Coleman Park for a postcard-worthy angle with fewer crowds. And if you’re curious about the rock’s volcanic origins or the birds that nest along its cliffs, the nearby Morro Bay Museum of Natural History offers quick and engaging exhibits.

I decided to rent a kayak from Kayak Shack, and I can’t recommend them enough. The staff was friendly, the gear was solid, and they had great local tips.

Craving a long walk on the beach? Morro Strand State Beach stretches for three beautiful miles along the coast, offering soft golden sand and plenty of room to roam. Whether you’re into beachcombing, fishing, surfing, or just relaxing with your toes in the sand, this beach has something for everyone.
For families or anyone looking for calmer waters, head to the north end near Tidelands Park, where the cove offers more protection from waves—perfect for splashing around or building sandcastles with little ones.
This is also a great spot to bring a picnic and watch the waves roll in with Morro Rock in the distance.
Hike to Black Hill for the Best View in Town
One of the best views in Morro Bay is just a short hike away. Black Hill, located in the Black Hill Open Space, offers a stunning 360° panorama of the harbor, town, estuary, and (of course) Morro Rock.
You can take the Cloisters Trail for a quick out-and-back hike or connect to the Ridge Trail if you’re up for a bit more of a workout. The trail is relatively easy, dog-friendly, and totally worth it—especially at sunset, when the sky lights up over the coastline.
Dog-Friendly Things to Do in Morro Bay 🐾
Bringing your furry friend along? Good news: Morro Bay is super dog-friendly, and there’s no shortage of places to let your pup play.
Our favorite spot is the off-leash dog beach north of Morro Rock. that’s my dog’s absolute favorite. It’s wide, peaceful, and usually full of friendly dogs (and humans). It’s way different from the beaches in Orange County. Just remember to bring waste bags, water, and towels for your pup!
Discover Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve: A Hidden Gem Near Morro Bay
A short drive from Morro Bay leads to one of the most unique—and slightly mystical—places I visited on this trip: Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve. This forest of twisted, ancient coast live oaks grows out of old sand dunes, creating a surreal, fairytale-like landscape.
The reserve has multiple trails, and the ecology here is incredibly diverse. You’ll pass through:
- Coastal sage scrub
- Dune oak scrub
- Riparian zones with wildflowers and birdsong
- The trails are hard to follow, so be prepared to wander around for a bit
✨ I went a few hours before sunset, and the golden light through the gnarled branches made the whole place glow.
But… real talk? I found five ticks on me afterwards. 😳 So wear long sleeves, use repellent, and check yourself afterwards. Also, poison oak is abundant—watch where you step!
Discover the Elfin Forest Natural Reserve
This 900 acre estuary in Los Osos features a coastal boardwalk through ancient pygmy oak trees and shoreline habitats. Look for migratory birds and possibly even otters or seals along the coast. It’s an easy and scenic hike suitable for all ages.
Hike the Trails at Montana de Oro State Park
One of my favorite things to do in Morro Bay is to hike the trails at Montana de Oro State Park. With over 8,000 acres and seven miles of shoreline, it’s one of the largest state parks in California. The park offers stunning trails along the bluffs and in the mountains, providing breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape.

The people in Morro Bay are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I’ve always felt safe and comfortable here, and I’ve met some amazing people during my visits.
