While you can’t hike the rock, you can soak up epic views by walking along the shoreline path at the Morro Rock Natural Preserve or from the small beach across the harbor mouth. Be sure to stop into the Nature Center to learn about this incredible geological formation and wildlife habitat.

One of the things I love most about Morro Bay is the wildlife. The bay is home to a large population of sea otters, and it’s common to see them floating around in the water or cuddling with their pups. I’ve spent hours just watching them, and falling in love with their playful antics. These adorable animals are often spotted playing in the shallow waters near the shore.
One of the best places to find them in the evening is by the Fishermans Family Sculpture right next to Morro Rock. There’s a kelp forest there that they love to hangout in.
If you’re a birdwatcher, Morro Bay is a must-visit. The area is a birder’s paradise, with over 350 species of birds having been spotted here. You can see everything from bald eagles and ospreys to pelicans and seagulls.
Exploring Morro Bay by Kayak: A Must-Do Adventure
So, I decided to try kayaking while I was in Morro Bay, and let me tell you, it was one of the best decisions I made! The calm waters of the bay offer a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape and wildlife.
I started by kayaking into the estuary, which is a protected area for birds. I saw herons, egrets, cormorants, pelicans and more! It was really cool to paddle through the calm waters and watch these birds go about their day.
After exploring the estuary, I paddled out to the sandbar that connects Morro Rock to the mainland. I climbed up the dunes and got a great view of the harbor and beach. It was the perfect spot to relax and take snack break.

I rented my kayak from Kayak Shack and had an absolutely fantastic experience. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the equipment was in great condition. Kayaking around Morro Bay was a highlight of my trip, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Relax on Morro Strand State Beach
Stretching north from Morro Rock is the half-moon shaped Morro Strand State Beach, offering 3 miles of pristine golden sand. Popular activities include beachcombing, fishing, surfing, swimming and building sandcastles. For calmer waters perfect for families, head to the beach’s north end in the protective cove near Tidelands Park.
Soak Up the Views from Black Hill
For breathtaking views over Morro Bay, take a short hike up Black Hill in the Black Hill Open Space. Follow the round-trip Cloisters Trail or connect to the Ridge Trail. At the top, the vista point offers a panorama taking in Morro Rock, Morro Bay Harbor, town and the estuary. Especially stunning at sunset!
Bring Your Dog to Morro Bay
Morro Bay is a dog-friendly paradise! There’s a designated off-leash dog beach north of Morro Rock that’s my dog’s absolute favorite. It’s wide, there are birds everywhere, and the locals are so chill. It’s way different from the beaches in Orange County. Just remember to bring waste bags, water, and towels for your pup!
A Magical Escape: Exploring Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve
I recently stumbled upon a hidden gem in the Morro Bay area: Los Osos Oaks State Natural Reserve. This enchanting forest is like stepping into a fairytale. Imagine towering oak trees draped in wispy Spanish moss, sunlight filtering through the canopy, and a sense of tranquility that washes over you.
The reserve is so peaceful and serene. It’s hard to believe you’re just a short drive from the bustling town of Morro Bay. The trails are easy to navigate, and you can spend hours wandering through the forest, feeling completely connected to nature.
I love the way the sunlight plays with the leaves, creating a dappled effect on the ground. The sound of birds chirping and the rustling of leaves is so soothing. It’s the perfect place to escape the stress of everyday life and recharge.

One of my favorite things to do in Morro Bay is to hike the trails at Montana de Oro State Park. With over 8,000 acres and seven miles of shoreline, it’s one of the largest state parks in California. The park offers stunning trails along the bluffs and in the mountains, providing breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape.

The people in Morro Bay are incredibly friendly and welcoming. I’ve always felt safe and comfortable here, and I’ve met some amazing people during my visits.
