Cat Park: A Feline Haven
One of my favorite spots in the city was the Cat Park. It’s home to the cats in the city – the most I’ve ever seen in one area! The square has several cat homes set up for these adorable residents, and it’s common to see a dozen of them meandering around. The cats here are super cute and friendly!

Kotor’s beauty isn’t just for strolling the charming streets; it’s for conquering too! Adventure seekers, listen up: a hike to the fortress in Kotor, San Giovanni Castle, perched atop the mountain is an absolute must. This 1,350-step climb might test your legs, but trust me, the reward is EPIC.
Prepare to be blown away by the best view of Kotor Old Town you’ll ever see (seriously, I’m not exaggerating!). The entire town unfolds beneath you like a miniature fairytale village. Boka Bay shimmers in the sunlight, and the mountains stretch out as far as the eye can see.
Here’s how to save on the entrance fee on your hike up to the fortress:
- Take the Ladder of Kotor entrance located near to the power plant to bypass the entrance fee.
- Follow the switchbacks for an easier climb before hitting the main flight of stairs leading to the fortress.
- You’ll need to climb a ladder through a “window” to connect to the main trail
- Note: I’ve heard this connection is monitored during peak season and could be inaccessible
- Take the stairs all the way down as it offers a fantastic view of old town.
- A Touch of History: Along the path, you’ll encounter the charming 16th-century Church of Our Lady of Remedy, a perfect spot to catch your breath and take in the scenery.
- Exiting the fortress from this location will lead you to the heart of the city without any fees.

While the chefs work their magic on the grill, meet new friends, sip on your favorite beverage (BYOB), and soak up the sun! Day Tours Around Montenegro
Kotor serves as a great jumping-off point for exploring more of Montenegro! Old Town Hostel partners with a local tour company, 360 Monte, down the street. They offer a diverse range of tours around the country at competitive prices, catering to a variety of interests. In the summer months, you can even opt for an adrenaline-pumping white water rafting adventure!
I personally enjoyed their Northern Montenegro tour, which offers a way to explore the country’s highlights in a single day – perfect for travelers with limited time. While it does involve a lot of driving, the scenery and stunning destinations is worth it!
Note: Not all tours are available every day during the off-season and there are other tour companies within the city if you prefer more flexibility.
A Guide to Riding Buses in the Balkans:
- Arrive on time, but be prepared to wait for a while
- Buses often arrive to the destination late
- Crossing borders between countries can be time-consuming
- If you’re traveling to Bosnia, make sure to PRINT your ticket beforehand. Bus drivers may not accept digital tickets, and you might have to plead your way on board.
