Montenegro Travel Guide: Bay of Kotor
Exploring Kotor Montenegro: Medieval Old Town
Kotor, Montenegro, pulsates with history within its UNESCO-listed Old Town. Imagine yourself wandering a maze of narrow, cobbled streets, their echoes whispering tales of over 1,300 years. Towering stone buildings adorned with intricate carvings and wrought-iron balconies line the way, each a testament to Kotor’s 400-year Venetian rule.
Stroll past imposing city walls of Kotor, some dating back to the 9th century, testaments to Kotor’s rich and resilient past. Don’t be surprised to stumble upon charming squares graced by 17th-century fountains or the awe-inspiring St. Tryphon Cathedral, built in the 12th century. Admire its frescoes, a captivating glimpse into Kotor’s history. Keep an eye out for the town’s famous feline residents napping in sunny doorways, adding to the undeniable charm. Getting lost is half the fun – you never know what hidden treasure you might discover around the corner.
But the magic extends beyond its fortified walls. Step outside the Old Town and be captivated by the beauty of Boka Bay, the largest natural bay in the Adriatic, stretching for nearly 30 kilometers. Crystal-clear waters lap against the shore, while dramatic limestone cliffs rise majestically from the water’s edge.
Adventure awaits: rent a kayak and explore hidden coves, take a boat trip to discover charming villages nestled along the coastline, or simply relax on the pebble beaches and soak up the sunshine. Kotor offers the perfect blend of historic charm, stunning natural beauty, and endless possibilities for exploration.
Free Walking Tour Tip! Like most cities I visit, Kotor offers free walking tours – a fantastic way to delve into the town’s rich history. I usually ask my hostel for recommendations, but GuruWalk is another great resource for finding reputable free tours.
Cat Park: A Feline Haven
One of my favorite spots in the city was the Cat Park. It’s home to the cats in the city – the most I’ve ever seen in one area! The square has several cat homes set up for these adorable residents, and it’s common to see a dozen of them meandering around. The cats here are super cute and friendly!
Conquer Kotor’s Best Views: Hike to San Giovanni Castle
Kotor’s beauty isn’t just for strolling the charming streets; it’s for conquering too! Adventure seekers, listen up: a hike to the fortress in Kotor, San Giovanni Castle, perched atop the mountain is an absolute must. This 1,350-step climb might test your legs, but trust me, the reward is EPIC.
Prepare to be blown away by the best view of Kotor Old Town you’ll ever see (seriously, I’m not exaggerating!). The entire town unfolds beneath you like a miniature fairytale village. Boka Bay shimmers in the sunlight, and the mountains stretch out as far as the eye can see.
Here’s how to save on the entrance fee on your hike up to the fortress:
- Take the Ladder of Kotor entrance located near to the power plant to bypass the entrance fee.
- Follow the switchbacks for an easier climb before hitting the main flight of stairs leading to the fortress.
- You’ll need to climb a ladder through a “window” to connect to the main trail
- Note: I’ve heard this connection is monitored during peak season and could be inaccessible
- Take the stairs all the way down as it offers a fantastic view of old town.
- A Touch of History: Along the path, you’ll encounter the charming 16th-century Church of Our Lady of Remedy, a perfect spot to catch your breath and take in the scenery.
- Exiting the fortress from this location will lead you to the heart of the city without any fees.
