Lagos Portugal: Best Hikes and Kayaking

Lagos, a picturesque town located in the Algarve region of Portugal, is one of my favorite nature spots in the entire country. With its stunning coastline, clear blue waters, and warm weather, it’s no wonder this beach city has become increasingly popular over the years.

If you’re looking for an adventure, you won’t be disappointed with the hiking and sea kayaking options in the area. I spent my days exploring the coastline from both land and water, and it was absolutely breathtaking.

Hiking in Portugal: A Stunning Coastal Adventure

One of the highlights of my trip to Portugal was hiking along the stunning coastline of Lagos. There are so many beautiful trails to explore, and the views are absolutely breathtaking.

I hiked from the town to Ponta da Piedade, and it was a fantastic experience. The trail offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and rocky cliffs, and there are several hidden coves and beaches along the way. It’s a 5-kilometer hike that takes around 2 hours to complete (depending on how often you stop to admire the view).

The trail is a combination of boardwalk and dirt paths that run parallel to the cliffs, offering numerous viewpoints to enjoy. You’ll also discover hidden coves and beaches that are perfect for a quick swim.

Don’t miss the highlight of the walk – the famous Ponta da Piedade! It’s a stunning rock formation located next to a lighthouse. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are more beaches beyond Ponta da Piedade to explore.

Make the Most of Your Visit to Ponta da Piedade

When you arrive at Ponta da Piedade, make your way to the nearby café and treat yourself to some tasty snacks and refreshing, ice-cold drinks. Check the café’s hours because it typically closes early, so plan your hike time accordingly.

I highly recommend sticking around to enjoy the sunset at Ponta da Piedade. It’s one of the most stunning views in the area!

If you don’t want to walk back in the dark, you can easily call an Uber back to the city center for an affordable 5-6 euros.”

Kayaking in Lagos

Lagos crystal clear waters are perfect for sea kayaking! For an exciting adventure, rent a kayak from one of the many tour operators in town and explore the beautiful coastline.

I went sea kayaking with Kayak Adventures Lagos during my March 2023 trip, and it was an absolute blast! It cost 35 euros for 2.5 hours of kayaking. Since I went during the off-season, I was able to spend more time on the water.

I felt incredibly safe with Kayak Adventures Lagos. They provided a motorboat that followed our group throughout the entire trip, along with multiple guides. And don’t worry about the length of time—if you’re feeling tired, they’ll just tie you to the motorboat and tow you back to shore! Check out this sea kayaking video of my experience!

During the tour, you’ll get to see beaches and sea caves that are only accessible by water. You can even paddle around the famous Ponta da Piedade rock formations and enjoy the views from a different perspective. It’s the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Algarve coastline.

If you don’t feel comfortable sea kayaking, there are plenty of boat tours available too!”
