Guide to Lofoten Norway:
Day 1 & 3: Tromsø – Gateway to the Arctic
Tromsø, Norway’s Arctic capital, was my starting point for this unforgettable road trip to Lofoten. Two days weren’t enough to soak up all its charm, but I managed to experience its vibrant energy. Colorful houses lined the waterfront, inviting me to explore. But it was the tranquil escape of Skoghus that truly stole my heart
Skoghus: A Hidden Arctic Gem
Nestled just outside Tromso Norway, Skoghus offered a peaceful respite from the city. Imagine waking up to crisp Arctic air and breathtaking fjord views. This charming village became my sanctuary.
- Exploring the Inlets: Skoghus boasts a network of captivating inlets just waiting to be discovered. Head to Tungeneset for panoramic views, or marvel at the historic Husøy Lighthouse, a sentinel standing guard over the Arctic seas.
- Unforgettable Viewpoints: For breathtaking vistas, Bergsbotn utsiktsplattform is a must-visit. This platform offers stunning panoramas of the surrounding fjords and mountains – a photographer’s paradise!
- A Scenic Drive: Embrace the beauty of the Lofoten landscape with a scenic drive around Stonglandseidet. Just remember, the weather in the Arctic can be a fickle friend, so be prepared for anything – rain, sleet, or even snow! The windy roads also add extra time to your journey, but the stunning scenery makes it completely worthwhile.
Making Memories (and Saving Money) at Skoghus Leirsted
I’m a big fan of home-cooked meals, so I loved the option to stock up on groceries and cook at Skoghus Leirsted‘s communal kitchen. It’s a great way to save money and enjoy the social atmosphere of the accommodations.
Short on Time? Skip these days and start your drive down to Lofoten as soon as you leave the Tromso airport!
Day 4: Embracing the E10: Skoghus to Svolvær
Buckle up and hit the gas on the E10 highway! The scenic drive from Skoghus to Svolvær, Lofoten’s largest town, is a feast for the senses. Towering, snow-capped peaks pierce the sky, their reflections dancing on the turquoise canvas of the Norwegian Sea. Keep your eyes peeled for charming fishing villages clinging to the coastline – each one a potential stop for a hidden gem or a friendly chat with a local.
A Wildlife Detour: Polar Park
As you embark on your journey, consider a detour to Polar Park, a unique wildlife park located just outside of Bardufoss. Here, you can encounter a variety of Arctic animals native to the region, including majestic musk oxen, playful Arctic foxes, and even imposing bears and lynxes. Witness these creatures up close and learn about their fascinating adaptations to the harsh Arctic environment.
Svolvær: Lofoten’s Vibrant Capital Awaits!
After your animal encounter (or if you choose to skip the detour), continue your journey to Svolvær. Prepare to be surprised by its lively atmosphere.
Embrace Your Inner Explorer:
- Svolvær Harbor: Stroll along the harbor, a bustling hub of fishing boats, bobbing yachts, and trendy restaurants serving the freshest seafood imaginable.
- Quirky Shops & Local Flavor: Browse unique shops brimming with handcrafted souvenirs, locally-sourced art, and traditional Norwegian knitwear – the perfect memento of your adventure.

A Forest of Fish: Unveiling the Stockfish Story
As you wander Svolvær’s harbor, a curious sight might catch your eye: wooden racks overflowing with dried cod. These aren’t just decorations, but a testament to Lofoten’s centuries-old relationship with cod fishing. Nicknamed “stockfish,” this air-dried delicacy is a cornerstone of the region’s economy and a fascinating cultural tradition. The traditional drying process, utilizing the cool, dry Arctic air, creates a protein-packed ingredient exported worldwide.
Beyond the Docks: Svolvær’s Adventures Await
Svolvær’s charm extends far beyond its harbor!
- Conquer Lofoten’s Peaks: Lace up your boots and conquer one of Svolvær’s many hiking trails.
- Paddle Through Paradise: Glide through the crystal-clear waters surrounding Svolvær by kayak. Marvel at the dramatic scenery from a unique perspective and keep an eye out for playful seals and otters!
- Indulge Your Taste Buds: Svolvær is a haven for seafood lovers. Sample traditional dishes featuring local ingredients like cod, or savor international cuisine with a stunning waterfront view.
Pro Tip for Travelers: Avoid a logistical hiccup like mine! If you book a self-check-in hotel like Fast Hotel, reach out the night before to confirm your check-in code. Especially if you book through 3rd part sites as they often forget to send you all the check in details. It took me an hour to get a hold of someone to check in.
Day 5: Fredvang & Slow Travelling in Lofoten

This is the Lofoten you’ve been dreaming of. Pull over whenever a scene captivates you, step out, and let the beauty wash over you. This is the essence of slow travel.
A Step Back in Time: Lofotr Viking Museum & Haukland Beach

Fredvang: A Night Steeped in Tradition
As the day draws to a close, find yourself in Fredvang, a picturesque village nestled amidst dramatic mountains. Here, you’ll spend the night at the iconic Lydersen Rorbuer og Sjøhus. These traditional fisherman’s cabins, converted into cozy accommodations, offer a unique opportunity to experience Lofoten culture firsthand. Let the sound of waves lapping at the shore lull you to sleep, marking the perfect end to a day of exploring.

Our journey continues to Å, another Lofoten gem. This horseshoe-shaped village is straight out of a fairytale. Capture its charm on camera, wander its quaint streets, and savor a sweet treat at a local bakery.
As the sun begins its descent, casting a golden glow over the landscape, it’s time to say goodbye to Å and embark on the next leg of your Lofoten adventure. Driving back up North, Harstad awaits!
I spent the night at another self-checkin accommodation: F2 Hotel.
Day 7 Harstad: A Hidden Gem in Northern Norway
As you bid farewell to Lofoten’s enchanting landscapes, don’t think your adventure ends there. Harstad, a charming town often overshadowed by its famous neighbors, awaits your discovery.

Begin your day with a visit to Trondenes Church, Norway’s oldest standing wooden church. This historic gem whispers tales of a bygone era. After absorbing the rich history, stroll through Harstad’s vibrant city center, a haven for shoppers and coffee lovers.
Nature’s Embrace on the Trondenes Peninsula
For a dose of nature, head to the Trondenes Peninsula. Hike through lush forests, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding islands and fjords. Or, for a unique perspective, rent a kayak and glide through the calm waters, surrounded by the symphony of nature.

As your Lofoten adventure draws to a close, Harstad offers a perfect ending. Soak in the local charm, savor the fresh air, and reflect on the unforgettable memories you’ve created.
