Ireland’s magic had been calling to me for months, so I finally packed my bags and hit the road for an epic 1-week adventure! From cozy accommodations to windswept cliffs, every day brought new surprises and unique experiences. Are you ready to join me on this unforgettable journey?
Let’s embark on this journey together! Throughout this blog series, I’ll be sharing my experiences, from breathtaking landscapes to charming encounters, so you can plan your own unforgettable Irish escape.
Full disclosure: While Ireland’s cities have their own charm, my heart was set on wide-open spaces and dramatic coastlines. Plus, navigating narrow city streets on the other side of the road – well, let’s just say the countryside felt much more my speed!
Day 1: Exploring Ireland’s North Coast from Belfast to Bundoran
Starting Point: Belfast
Embark on a mesmerizing road trip along Ireland’s North Coast, where natural wonders and Game of Thrones magic await. Our first day of the adventure begins in Belfast and concludes in the charming town of Bundoran. So fasten your seatbelt and get ready for a day of awe-inspiring beauty and cultural exploration that’s perfect for GOT fans and nature lovers alike!
Dark Hedges – The Iconic Kingsroad from Game of Thrones
Our first stop is the enchanting Dark Hedges, an iconic location featured as the Kingsroad in GOT. These ancient beech trees, planted in the 18th century, create a tunnel that transports visitors to a fantasy world. Stroll along the avenue, tracing the footsteps of characters from the series, and marvel at the intertwining branches above.
National Trust Carrick-a-Rede and Larrybane Quarry
Next, we head to the National Trust Carrick-a-Rede, home to a thrilling rope bridge suspended 30 meters above the Atlantic Ocean. Originally built by salmon fishermen, the bridge provides breathtaking views of the coast and the opportunity to catch glimpses of local wildlife. For GOT fans, this is the site where Balon Greyjoy and his brother Euron fight.
Don’t miss the adrenaline rush of crossing the bridge and exploring the beautiful surroundings. Just a stone’s throw away is Larrybane Quarry, where Brienne of Tarth was first introduced to the series.
Giant’s Causeway
Our journey continues to the awe-inspiring Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its surreal hexagonal basalt columns formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. This geological wonder stretches beyond the Irish coast, connecting to the mysterious island of Staffa in Scotland.
The mythological tale of the Giant Finn McCool adds an extra layer of intrigue. Legend has it that the Giant built the causeway as a challenge to his Scottish rival, Benandonner.
Read more about visiting Staffa in my blog linked here.
Dunseverick Castle
As we drive along the scenic coast, our next stop is the historic ruins of Dunseverick Castle. Perched on cliffs overlooking the sea, this medieval stronghold offers a glimpse into Ireland’s tumultuous past, with ties to Viking raids and battles between Irish clans.
Nearby lies Dunluce Castle, which was used as a film site for the formidable stronghold of House Greyjoy, Pyke, in GOT.
Where We Stayed:
Our day ended at the charming seaside town of Bundoran, where we stayed at the Rolling Waves Guesthouse. It’s a simple guesthouse, but there are nicer hotels in the area. Don’t forget to walk across the street to see surfers and catch a breathtaking sunset view of the bay.
