Kotor Montenegro: Medieval Old Town

Kotor’s heart beats within its UNESCO-listed Old Town, a maze of narrow, cobbled streets that have echoed with footsteps for over 1,300 years. Imagine yourself wandering past towering stone buildings, their facades decorated with intricate carvings and wrought-iron balconies – each a testament to Kotor’s 400-year rule by the Venetian Republic.

Don’t be surprised to stumble upon a city square graced by a charming 17th-century fountain or the awe-inspiring St. Tryphon Cathedral, built in the 12th century and boasting frescoes that tell stories of Kotor’s past. Keep an eye out for cats napping in sunny doorways, adding to the town’s charm. Getting lost is half the fun – you never know what hidden treasure you might discover around the next corner.

But Kotor’s magic extends beyond its fortified walls. Step outside the Old Town and you’ll find yourself gazing upon the beauty of Boka Bay, the largest natural bay in the Adriatic, stretching for nearly 30 kilometers. Crystal-clear waters lap against the shore, while dramatic limestone cliffs rise from the water’s edge. Here, you can rent a kayak and explore hidden coves, take a boat trip to discover villages nestled along the coastline, or simply relax on the pebble beaches and soak up the sunshine. Kotor offers the perfect blend of historic charm and natural beauty, making it a truly unforgettable destination.

As with all new cities I vist, I recommend taking a free walking tour to learn more about the city’s history!

Cat Park: A Feline Haven

One of my favorite spots in the city was the Cat Park. It’s home to the cats in the city – the most I’ve ever seen in one area! The square has several cat homes set up for these furry creatures, and it’s common to see a dozen of them meandering around. The cats here are super cute and friendly!

Conquering Kotor’s Crown: Hike to San Giovanni Castle

Kotor’s beauty isn’t just for strolling; it’s for conquering too! For those seeking an epic adventure, a hike to the majestic San Giovanni Castle perched atop the mountain is a must-do. This 1,350-step challenge offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Old Town, Boka Bay, and the surrounding mountains.

Here’s how to save on the entrance fee on your hike up to the fortress:

  • Take the Ladder of Kotor entrance located near to the power plant to bypass the entrance fee.
  • Follow the switchbacks for an easier climb before hitting the main flight of stairs leading to the fortress.
    • You’ll need to climb a ladder through a “window” to connect to the main trail
    • Note: I’ve heard this connection is monitored during peak season and could be inaccessible
  • Take the stairs all the way down as it offers a fantastic view of old town.
  • A Touch of History: Along the path, you’ll encounter the charming 16th-century Church of Our Lady of Remedy, a perfect spot to catch your breath and take in the scenery.
  • Exiting the fortress from this location will lead you to the heart of the city without any fees.

Tips for Budget-Friendly Travel: Head outside the walls for more affordable options as restaurants in Old town tend to be more expensive. While the Balkans are a more affordable part of Europe, Kotor, and nearby Dubrovnik are some of the most expensive cities in the area.

Kotor serves as a fantastic jumping-off point for exploring more of Montenegro! Old Town Hostel partners with a local tour company, 360 Monte, down the street. They offer a diverse range of tours around the country at competitive prices, catering to a variety of interests. In the summer months, you can even opt for an adrenaline-pumping white water rafting adventure!

I personally enjoyed their Northern Montenegro tour, which offers a fantastic way to explore the country’s highlights in a single day – perfect for travelers with limited time. While it does involve a lot of driving, the stunning scenery and diverse destinations is worth it!

Note: Not all tours are available every day during the off-season and there are other reputable tour companies within the city if you prefer more flexibility.

A Guide to Riding Buses in the Balkans:

  • Arrive on time, but be prepared to wait for a while
  • Buses often arrive to the destination late
  • Crossing borders between countries can be time-consuming
  • If you’re traveling to Bosnia, make sure to PRINT your ticket beforehand. Bus drivers may not accept digital tickets, and you might have to plead your way on board.

In conclusion, Kotor is a truly unique and beautiful destination that offers something for everyone. Whether you are interested in history, culture, nature, or simply relaxing by the sea, Kotor is sure to leave a lasting impression on you. So, if you are planning a trip to the Balkans, be sure to add Kotor to your itinerary!
